It was with the greatest sadness that we learned of the death of Alan Farrar after months of bravely fought illness. One of the gentlemen of Hayes he worked tirelessly for the betterment of our village.
Alan spent many years as Superintendent of Hayes Churchyard and this is where I first met him and we worked closely for many years. His gentle sense of humour and gentlemanly demeanour was so important in his outlook on life.
His interests included Rugby and he spent many happy hours supporting Blackheath Rugby Club and was an enthusiastic visitor to Twickenham for most international games. Alan was always very happy to audit accounts for the Hayes Village Association and Hayes Branch of Beckenham Conservative Association amongst others, and I know from personal experience he kept all the treasurers on their toes! He was pedantic in his quest for accuracy.
The world will be a much sadder place without Alan, his sense of fair play and lovely and perpetual good humour.
Our sincere condolences to his family.
