Beckenham Junction and Elmers End trams to close for nearly four weeks

Services will be paused from March 29 to April 24, while tram replacement bus services will be available to customers.

The closures are due to maintenance works on the track at two key locations: East Croydon and Sandilands Junction.

The work includes upgrading the ‘switches and crossing’ units, which control how trams manoeuvre on the tracks, and renewing existing tracks.

Work on the tracks will take place at the same time as doing it separately would result in the “tram service being closed for longer”, according to TfL.

The closure will largely take place during the Easter school holidays when customer numbers are generally lower and engineering teams working around the clock to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Other public transport options remain available within Croydon and the wider surrounding area.

This includes London Overground at West Croydon, and National Rail at East Croydon, Elmers End, Birkbeck and Beckenham Junction.

To support customers with onward travel advice there will be uniformed trams staff at key tram stops, these include:

• Addiscombe
• Beckenham Junction
• Coombe Lane
• East Croydon
• Lloyd Park
• New Addington
• Sandilands
• Woodside

Navid Golshan, TfL’s General Manager for London Trams, said: “This planned maintenance is vital to ensure we can continue to offer customers a reliable service across the London Trams network.

“The works being undertaken are essential and must take place at the earliest opportunity. I want to thank customers for their patience while this takes place and would ask customers to plan ahead, allowing plenty of time for journeys.”
