Holocaust Memorial Day commemorated in Bromley

Many readings, speeches and prayers were heard, with the speakers, including local leaders of different faiths, highlighting and reflecting on the tragedy of the Holocaust on the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp.

Candles were lit during the ceremony including six candles representing the six million Jewish people murdered during the Holocaust, with the other groups persecuted during the Holocaust also remembered during proceedings. One of these candles was lit by a 94-year-old Holocaust survivor. A further candle was lit to remember the victims of other genocide including in Bosnia, Cambodia, Darfur, Romani and Rwanda, with a final candle lit as a symbol of hope for a better future, in line with the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day this year.

The Mayor of Bromley, Councillor David Jefferys said: “It is incredibly important that we take the time to remember the horrors of the Holocaust, so we can be guided by the testimonies of those who survived and the stories of those who were so tragically murdered. As we come together today as we have for a number of years, both here in Bromley and across the country, we reflect on these harrowing lessons, so we can strive together for a better future, that seeks to confine these horrors to the past. We must never forget.”

The Mayor of Bromley was joined at the event by his Chaplain, the Deputy Mayor, Leader of the Council, MPs, elected members and council officers. Faith group representatives speaking at the service include from Bromley Three Faiths Group and from Bromley Reform Synagogue, who are hosting an exhibition on Jewish life experience for local schools this week. This is available for interested residents to see following the multi-faith service on Saturday 1 February and residents can get in touch to find out more.
